Cannabidiol or CBD oil is extracted from the Cannabis plant. This chemical compound has a lot of health benefits for humans. However, it is not only humans that can benefit from using CBD oil. Although most of the studies into CBD oil has been focused on its effects on humans, there is a lot of talk about how animals can also benefit from it. One of the few studies into CBD oil and animals has revealed that this chemical compound has similar health benefits that it has on human health. CBDFx produces great products for pets and humans.
Researchers at Cornell University recently carried out a pharmacokinetic and clinical study into how CBD oil affects dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. The study at Cornell shows that 2mg/kg of CBD oil given to dogs twice daily can ease the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Researchers found that CBD oil helps to increase the activity and comfort in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. An abstract of the study completed at Cornell was submitted to the 2017 American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Indianapolis in 2017.
Reports indicate that the study into how CBD oil can treat dogs with osteoarthritis was headed by Joe Wakshlag, DVM, Ph.D., DACVN, DACVSMR. Wakshlag is an associate professor and section chief of nutrition at Cornell. The goal of the study was to determine the basic oral pharmacokinetics, the efficacy of CBD oil, and also to assess the safety of CBD oil in managing pain in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.
According to the abstract, the team of researchers tested two different doses of CBD oil (2mg/kg and 8mg/kg). The CBD oil used the study was provided by ElleVet. No negative studies of CBD oil were recorded at either dosage.
Researchers tested the ability of CBD oil to manage pain using a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind crossover study. The dogs with osteoarthritis were given 2mg/kg of CBD oil every 12 hours, and other dogs received placebo oil. The dogs were given the CBD oil for four weeks, and there was a two-week washout period. CBDFx creams and lotions are also effective treatment.
The results of the study support reports on the benefits of CBD oil. The study is proof that CBD oil can reduce pain and increase activity. Despite the results of the study, vets across the US cannot use CBD oil in treating dogs since it is currently illegal. CBD oil manufactured and distributed for veterinary use is not legal on a federal and state level. However, each state has its own rules, but very few are open to using CBD to treat pets.
Despite the laws, pet owners have been using CBD oil to treat their pets with different illnesses. Advocates for CBD oil to be used to treat pets say it is better for the government to make its use legal. They argue that when legal, authorities can better control which products are being sold and their efficacy can be measured. There is a danger with most owners using CBD oil meant for humans on their pets since they are entirely sure how it will affect these animals.
